Hickory City Hall - 1980s KKK and Today

My older sister Sara, who taught me all about photography and darkroom techniques, which i quickly forgot minutes later and had to re-learn later in college, took these photos of a KKK "rally" or "march" in downtown Hickory in the mid 80s. i use quotations, because as you can see, it is quite a pitiful little band of determined bigots and probably not worthy of the "rally" designation.

I think these pictures are pretty awesome, not only for their local historical reference, but also as because of their artistic value. I can only hope that a smidgen of my sister's influence has ever rubbed off on me. Thanks big sis.

Here are some photos and animated gifs I worked on for Scott Isenhour's music-slash-art solo-collective Sky City. Consider the air cassette one of his sculptures. He plays guitar and keyboard/synthesizers, and does solo and collaborative work. Scott also produces elaborate collages, which I have displayed below in epileptic format.

In the flickr gallery, I combed out the pure garbage and kept most of the ones where at least you could tell there are humans in them. That way, people could still go, "hey I think that's me! or me being eaten and then thrown back up by a giant squid?" I don't have much experience with flash because I hate the shadowless blam! of an on-camera flash picture, however, I found an old speedlite flash of my mother's, and eventhough it won't work with my camera, I ordered a cheap(ly made) chinese remote trigger that allows me to get the flash off the camera. If you can get the flash even just 2 or 3 feet (arm's length) away from the lens, that will help create some shadow lines and produce a better picture than !blam!
If I had been thinking clearly, I could have set up at a better spot in the rink to get more lateral motion. At the time, I was kind of like a cross between a kid in a candy store and a kid playing a prank. I just kept looking around, grinning and pushing my flash on a cardboard box further out into traffic.

After I started fretting about "practicing" what we were going to do for our set, Ed convinced me that we should be punk-rock and figure it out in the car on our way down, and that's exactly what we did. We plugged my micro into the car stereo and when i pressed record, it produced some great dynamic feedback that I could "play" by moving around all the different car speakers, while Ed used his micro to playback some craziness that he had captured earlier. Then during our set, Ed ran the projectors and his micro, and I played my micro by slightly pressing on the rewind button so that the tape dragged, and also while I played with the FX on my sound board.

Revisiting the Archives, making Stickers, Fall is Here

Here are a couple of shots that I never did anything with because, as color images they never sang to me. But in the nature of this new tritone extreme-contrast semi-lithograph look I've gotten into lately, I revisited them and I think they found their calling:

This was from the very first time I pulled the camera out after the stroke. In the procession of me starting to give a f*ck about anything on the creative or artistic side of life (for example, music had no function for me anymore because it was something i listened to while i was doing something, as in moving around) you could say this was the seminal act in my attempt to recover my lost creative-playful-self, or some other hokey Jungian shit like that:

Then I worked on some old photos for my sister's 40th birthday. This is she and I, apparently exhausted and peeved after our dad dragged us around London all day.
I know, right? Peeved because you were dragged around an exotic foreign city? What a bunch of spoiled brats. For most of our childhoods our mom worked for a national airline, so we were blessed with basically free air travel around the country and world. We were like the butler's scurrilious kids that get to tag along with the Lords and Ladies on the trips to Vienna. The Simpson's go to Hawaii.

before that I went through a sticker making phase. The Dimmer Switch is a pseudo-anti-quazi name i came up with for the appropriation mashup music i've been making as a result of re-accompanying Projexorcism on the auditory enhancement battle station.
i grew up with dimmer switches and always appreciated their hippy mood setting capabilities. i think appropriating it as an icon of iconoclastistic refusal to buy into absolutisms seemed familial and appropriate.
